SITTING,
FEELING COMFORTABLE IN A CHAIR
This series is ideal for anyone who has difficulty getting up and down from the floor.

We all sit. Some for many hours a day, and often in chairs that are very poorly designed. Unfortunately, many expensive, ergonomically designed chairs may not encourage you to sit any better than a basic old fashioned kitchen chair or stool. In this series we will explore movement and balance while sitting on a chair. Come improve your comfort in sitting, getting in and out of a chair and moving and balancing in general to feel more freedom in all your activities. You will also gain ideas for movements to play with when you find yourself sitting for long periods of time. Although the lessons are in chairs, they will also improve your ability to sit on the floor comfortably.

               Thursday Evening, 6:15pm to 7:15pm

Awareness Through Movement(R)
lesson.

As a martial artist Moshe Feldenkrais understood the importance of, and practiced the ability to move in any direction without hesitation. Being centered in such a way that when necessary one can move quickly not only forward or backward, but sideways, turn clockwise or counter clockwise, jump or move to the ground in an instant. He created a number of fascinating lessons using movement in relation to imaginary lines, circular and spherical images that engage the whole of ourselves in refining symmetry in movement and balancing the body. Through the focus of moving in relation to an outside image, our movement reorganizes itself, bypassing our analytical tendencies to correct, (which are always faulty), and accessing the brilliance of the brain to self-correct. Since asymmetrical movement habits are often at the root of many difficulties and influence our ability to heal, why not come challenge your attention and access your brain's brilliance to improve?

~ A SPRING IN YOUR STEP ~

For Walkers, Runners, Jumpers, Sports Enthusiasts, Dancers, Anyone and Everyone desiring more resiliency in their movement and life.

The lack of sping in someone's step is noticable, but do you know what it is that is missing? Maybe they are melancholy, afraid of falling or in pain. You may notice an unusual rhythm and heaviness in one person's gait, while another person seems to move through an asymmetry with profound lightness. Same is true for thin or heavier builds. How is it that we organize our structure through many joints to cushion our landing and rebound us from the ground to ultimately absorb shock efficiently? Surely finding more spring in our step affects the health of all our bones and joints, can it also affect our mood?

WE WILL:
  • Refresh your memory of an internal rhythm, that however variable, is distinctly your own.
  • Find and release some of the strongest muscles in your core so they are available for active use.
  • Clarify the relationship between ankles, knees and hips for improved comfort in shock absorbency.
  • Reconnect with your toes, they may do more for you than you realize!
  • Rediscover fluidity in your spine in all of the above processes.
The workshop is designed to progress over the two days. You may take either of the first days to begin, Sunday, August 1rst is the second day for everyone. If you cannot attend August 1rst, you may attend one of the first days only. If you would like to repeat the first day the cost is $35.00.

Location:  Move Into Balance Feldenkrais® Studio
1335 suite J, Gusdorf Road
Cost:
$85.00 for one workshop, $160 for both,

If you are interested in a workshop specifically for people who have had hip replacements please contact Prisca

The following themes will be repeated in the future.

                    ~ SENSITIVE HANDS ~

The quality of our thinking, action and relating can be profoundly affected by improving the sensitivity and quality of movement of our hands. From birth, rich with nerve endings, our hands and finger tips are gathering information and helping make sense of the world around us. Our movement organizes to move toward, touch and know whatever calls our attention. Once fine motor skills are in place, most people take for granted the remarkable learned dexterity of their hands and fingers, often using more effort than necessary for simple tasks. How are your hands right now? Could they be more at ease? Tense them and feel the effect in yourself. The quality of your hands is a reflection of the state of your nervous system. Awareness Through Movement® lessons are a way to immediately affect your central nervous system. Come spend a day thanking your hands for all they do for you, and feel the difference in your whole self. The experience may be surprisingly global!

~ IMPROVE YOUR BREATHING ~
Both awake and asleep, the quality of our breath affects every aspect of our life. Moshe Feldenkrais developed a number of breathing lessons to improve awareness of the process of breathing so the involuntary action will improve on it's own and adapt appropriately to whatever activity we choose. The lessons use movement, imagination and breath to improve the use of the diaphragm, lungs, pleura, chest and spine and can begin to shift longstanding postural habits and increase stamina. Come experience how new awareness and flexibility in your chest leads to improved flexibility throughout your whole body.

"Very, very, very enlightening and clarifying ... my thinking was stimulated and I came away with a much better sense of functional anatomy, i.e. how the body is built to move and how certain misunderstandings of how the body works can lead to the training of a dancer that will be injured, frustrated or never fully expressive. Understanding how the bones are so beautifully put together gives me a greater understanding of how my thinking and misconceptions were affecting my movement. Being able to visualize how the spine can twist, turn, flex, and spiral helps me organize my thinking and therefore my movements more clearly. THANKS!" - Alice Brydges, CA
